    Snow White

    ★★★

I have zero nostalgia for the original film whatsoever, and maybe that influenced my opinion on Snow White, but I thought this live-action remake ranked among the better Disney adaptations. Rachel Zegler pours her heart and soul into Snow White, and proves to be the fairest of all during the film’s new and old musical numbers which mostly work.

  • Opus

    Opus

    ★★½

Opus could have been special, but it’s safe to say that this is one of A24’s weakest efforts thus far. A pale imitation of countless group-of-people-get-trapped-inside-a-compound movies that have come before. Edebiri is underutilized. Malkovich, however, is quite magnetic as acclaimed singer Alfred Moretti.

    ★★★★½

Hollywood’s a killer, and MaXXXine is one killer finale to Ti West’s all-timer horror trilogy. Some decisions might be divisive for a few, but West’s approach - transporting us to ‘80s Hollywood with a giallo twist - results in a film as visually beautiful as it is gruesome. Mia Goth’s performance and Maxine’s rise to stardom comes full circle, finally confronting her past in order to complete her future. X-cellent!

    Wonka

    ★★★★

While Wonka leaves out the capitalism undertones and darker elements of the original story, Paul King’s film is chock(olate) full of heart, wonder, and yes, whimsy. GREAT musical soundtrack with odes to the original music while offering a solid dose of original work, and the direction feels like a warm blanket of cozy candy. Timothée Chalamet, thankfully, doesn’t try to imitate Gene Wilder: he does his own thing, and does a great job at that. A real Christmastime treat!
