Dynamic and disturbing, with some solid performances, but you definitely feel the influences that everyone else mentioned. I especially couldn’t help thinking of Get Out - to me it hits some similar beats with slicker pacing, and tone.

The Substance's filmmakers have determined that their themes are so subtle and sophisticated that they must be hammered into the audience’s heads dozens of times in a row with constant flashbacks and second-grade level dialogue for us to really get the message. There is no room for complexity in the characters or plot; I have never witnessed a movie treat its audience with such contempt. The few bits that manage to make you feel something (makeup in mirror) are drowned…
