The Substance not only fully encapsulates the internal struggles of aging, particularly for women in the performing arts, but it also delivers a nostalgic throwback to '80s horror reminiscent of classics like “Society” and “Basket Case”. Loved all the horror Easter eggs too!
The film is smart, terrifying, and even manages to be funny—I always appreciate when a horror movie doesn’t take itself too seriously. Demi Moore was an absolute dream, and Margaret Qualley SLAYS (I’m grateful that they cast a trained dancer for the character of Sue, which added an extra layer of authenticity to her performance).
5 stars. Possibly my new favorite horror film.
