The Card Counter 2021
My favourite Schrader picture since Light Sleeper. Like that underrated 1992 classic, The Card Counter belongs to the series of Schrader’s God’s Lonely Man films — beginning with the Martin Scorsese directed Taxi Driver, followed by the Schrader-directed American Gigolo, The Walker, First Reformed, etc. These are the stories that Schrader tells best — and better than anyone! Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Defoe are all individually and collectively excellent. Isaac’s “Any man can tilt” monologue deserves…
