  Nosferatu 2024

  Before I went into the cinema I predicted it would be  2hrs of Lily Rose Depp heavy breathing and wailing (call me mystic Meg!) I liked the references to the 1922 silent film but I think if you’re going to create a version of such an iconic, historically relevant story that had been reimagined so many times, then you should have something new to add to it. Sadly I don’t think it added anything, it’s not bad though.

  The Substance 2024

  Allot of reviews I’ve seen are based around what they think the film should and shouldn’t portray. I don’t think it’s necessarily the films job to present itself with a moral depiction of ‘the truth’ or a ‘life lesson’ but this is definitely art and has created allot of room for conversation around societal beauty standards. I really enjoyed The Substance and somehow feel that if this film had been released a bit sooner, say 5-10 years ago, I think it would’ve hit even harder.

  This was my first time watching this film and the first thing that strikes me is the clear origins of many crime thrillers of today; in the way of style, pace, editing, visuals for example.

  I couldn’t help but imagine this film much longer with stronger character developments such as Detective Somerset’s (Morgan Freeman) origin story that is touched upon throughout or Tracy’s (Gwyneth Paltrow) life of misery in the city as husband Detective Mills (Brad Pitt) is always on…

  Uncut Gems 2019

  Probably one or the most anxiety inducing films I’ve watched. Following Howard’s (Adam Sandler’s) reckless, thrill-seeking journey in desire of a big payoff is difficult to watch. I hated the character and simultaneously wanted him to succeed in order to end the chaos, fuelled by a gambling addicted life. Uncut gems has some deep moral themes of hedonism and exploitation showing Howard’s family life continue to crumble around him as he uses his loved ones as pawns and prioritises his compulsion.

  NB: don’t watch this film immediately after coffee or before bed 😬
