i genuinely think this would have made an amazing photobook. visually it blew me away, i saw moving rinko kawauchi and morgan ashcom photos. but as a film despite its emotional and historical weight it dragged
I felt the determination of the chase, the sleeplessness of loss, the cold rain of rural Pennsylvania in the winter, the complexity of a man who kills deer “to keep the population down” and who claimed “he’s not a person anymore; he stopped being a person when he took our daughters” - a man who didn’t just love his daughter, but was searching desperately for an outlet for his anger and deep emotional wounds. It all manifested in tension in my shoulders for 153 minutes and I loved it.
