the film that will make you reconsider all of your other five star ratings.

every frame is its own beauty

some of the most masterful framing

    best performance of all time?

almost a 100 years old, where did we go wrong to end up with today's cinema?

was the addition of live recorded sound in fim that much of a destructive force?

    maybe we'll never know

but at least this film survives, and hopefully for another 100 years.

audibly yelped "no" and put my hands to my head when the credits rolled

the purest exhibition of artistic liberation put to film, more flourish-blossom canvas than movie

light paints in a floating camera's candyfloss-swathed peddle-paddle frame, lucid and observing - distantly immersed

vast splashes of people-pigments splatter the dreamscape, masterfully directed and hand-planted surges of brushstroke ensembles

kurosawa's captaining of colour leaves dictionaries speechless

a stark reminder of what film can be

i thought waiting for winds of winter was bad.

rip mr gance, you really left us with the biggest "what if?" in cinema.

watching a five and a half hour film should not prompt the desire to watch it again as soon as the credits roll.

    cinema at its most cinema

how so pretty why how everything

do i give 5 just to pretty? idk.

so so take time. linger camera finds the heart and cries

why spend hours learning how story work silly questions sit down ten hours read and reread same shit blah blah duologues bro just watch kobayashi.

i wish we had more films that just told their story, cooked, gave time, framed art, teased sparing music, let the plot bubble yesyes.

how does he paint the sky…
