Just a guy who likes movies and prefers physical media.
Top four are my most recent 5-star films.
I wanted the movie promised by the movie poster. I mean, it's there, sorta, but damn it's slow with very little action or suspense.
The film does have some of the cool, classic sci-fi aesthetics you'd expect, but that wears thin pretty fast. There are a few inspired moments, particularly the moment when you realize this is a sequel to Haskin's War of the Worlds (it's not really, but when I saw what I saw, I grew momentarily excited), just…
They say there’s an infinite number of alternate universes, and in one of them, there’s a version of me still watching this slog of a movie. While watching this in my own timeline, I wondered if I had slipped into the wrong time stream and sat with him, endlessly watching this movie that never seemed to go anywhere but threatened to at some point consider telling a story I might care about if I just watched a little more.
I haven't seen this in 20+ years, and unfortunately, I watched the director's cut, which adds elements that are (mostly) unnecessary. So I can't quite give it five stars. This one is a slow burn, and yes, the storyline feels "been there, done that" at this point, but damn, it's still a strong movie after all these years.
