Just a guy who likes movies and prefers physical media.
Top four are my most recent 5-star films.
On the surface, this is a slow, understated film with three unrelated stories that never really come together in a meaningful way. Yet, despite its shortcomings, it works on an emotional level, thanks in large part to the final story. It's beautiful and lonely and heartbreaking and honest.
This one just never came together in a meaningful way for me. I wanted to feel the weight of the moral dilemma, but it never quite hit home. It's there, sure, but I never felt it. And the secondary investigation felt forced, leading the story away from the real heart of the quandary.
I haven't seen this in 20+ years, and unfortunately, I watched the director's cut, which adds elements that are (mostly) unnecessary. So I can't quite give it five stars. This one is a slow burn, and yes, the storyline feels "been there, done that" at this point, but damn, it's still a strong movie after all these years.
