    Despite the many features that should endear this film to me—Montreal setting, NFB-style documentaries, references to Sontag and Freud—I couldn’t get on board. Schrader is still too much in his self-pitying alt-boomer confessional mode, and the potentially interesting commentary on subjects like documentary ethics and the psychogeography of borders is washed out by indulging too deeply in a character study of a guy who is kind of a jerk. 

    A director’s attention to detail betrays their level of care, and let’s just say that there’s no way Leonard’s home is in Old Montreal.
