The first story of the film is pretty rough to get through. Martin is a miserable protagonist, taking any chance he can get to tune out the world around him in favor of his own self centered internal monologue. This misanthropic view tends to bleed out into the literal world around him, and it can be hard to tell how accurate to life these events should be interpreted. The Dark Knight 2008
The joker is a caricature of an anarchist, and exists as a result of the films nietzchian opposition to nihilism. At it's worst this movie is actively fascist and at it's best it basically poses a reskin of the trolley problem then comes up with the answer that you should beat the shit out of the trolley. The fact that it has gained the praise it has is (in my opinion) entirely the result of it's ability to speak nonsense in a way that sounds profound. It turns out that in reality, very few people actually want to watch the world burn.
