Came for Lawrence Fishburne in space, didn’t expect the gore. Honestly it feels like a bloodier more sci-fi version of Sunshine but with a half-baked lore that makes things more extreme but doesn’t quite stick the landing.

With some nods to the original, this movie didn’t suck me into the action as much as feel predictable. The writing was okay, the CGI better than I expected, the acting a bit on the nose, the plot was rough and while it was advertised as a fun summer thriller, I never ended up experiencing that exactly. I had hopes for something fun but instead got a character drama with occasional science dumps that were almost technobabble. I honestly expected less drama and more tornados, but that might be for the sequel of the sequel.

Though it’s less exciting and thrilling than its estranged cousin, Angels and Demons, it’s somehow far more exciting than you’d expect for “many old guys try to make a decision over the course of several days while hiding secrets.” More akin to 12 Angry Men. Acting is great, the photography and music elevate it from being something that would put me to sleep to something that had me thinking about all of the politics and modern technological changes that goes into choosing a pope.

Low-key wish the nuns got a bigger role. Also, coulda been gayer.

Came for the relationship drama, stayed for the tennis.

Admittedly I ended up watching this movie in two parts (roughly halfway split) which made it kind of fun to feel a small time gap in correspondence with the gap between their earlier years and when the action of the film takes place. It's messy, saucy, and definitely more about the complexities of relationships, friendships, and love than it is about tennis (it can't always be about tennis—sorry, Tashi). I think…
