  saw it on the big screen on the 50th anniversary of its release and got so much more out of it than on my first viewing. keitel isn’t one of my favorite leading men but i love him as a tortured catholic seeking redemption for himself by way of helping his oldest friend pay back his debts. really took me back to growing up catholic and the constant gnawing guilt. the soundtrack is likely my favorite of all scorsese’s pictures…
