Beautifully shot and acted and stylishly designed. It’s very dialogue heavy, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but not exactly what I expected. This isn’t a sit back and enjoy the ride spy caper. You gotta pay attention or you’re gonna miss stuff. I don’t think it quite rises to the level of Out of Sight or Oceans 11, but hey, that’s a high bar. Soderbergh is great at this stuff. Blanchett is having a blast. And Fassbender is perfect as the detail oriented spy who doesn’t miss a beat. Their relationship is the heart of this, and it’s pretty fun.
More Okja than Parasite (complete with themes of animal welfare), Bong Joon Ho’s latest is bursting with creative and compelling ideas. It doesn’t all hold together — some of the political commentary doesn’t really land, and the cartoonish portrayal of the villains, while occasionally hilarious, lowers the stakes. But there is plenty here to keep you engaged. Pattinson is great.
In many music biopics, the arc and stakes feel artificially imposed on a set of circumstances, and this does not avoid that trap. There’s not a ton of forward momentum, story-wise. The central conflict isn’t even really introduced until the third act. But the music is very good, as is the acting, especially Barbaro (who has a beautiful voice), Fanning and Chalamet.
I did not expect to like the Vatican movie this much! Conclave invites us into this strange reality with uncompromising detail and proves to be a smart, taut, suspenseful ride filled with terrific acting and writing.
For me though, this movie is about the brilliant Ralph Fiennes, who is absolutely one of our finest working actors. He has never won an Oscar or Golden Globe. I don’t know if this one has the juice, but I would be in support. He’s so fucking good.
