A lo fi, low budget, high creativity, high quirkiness film that keeps the momentum going for one and a half hour straight. Really amazing what interesting storytelling you can achieve with just a handful of actors and one confined place. The only thing that left me unconvinced was the ending that seemed a bit too simple (and the protagonist's role in the solution of the problem too minor) to really be satisfying. Still, another great testament for how creativity is the central driving force behind every great movie, never production value.

Past Lives 2023
A tender, quiet film that delivers a very nuanced, believable portrayal of what it's like to live (and love) in between cultures, in between hemispheres. All of this is strongly helped by a great script, good acting, beautifully human characters (with Arthur standing out in particular, such a heartfelt portrayal of his conflict), as well as my favorite film score of this decade so far. None of it is ever loud or intrusive, instead it invites you into its small calm world - as with most beautiful things in life, they might fly by unnoticed if you're busy looking for the next sensationalist spectacle.

Wendell & Wild 2022
Selick's weakest stop-motion film yet, which doesn't mean much since all of them have been fantastic prior to this. It definitely has the dark, goofy atmosphere down, but the story feels overstuffed and takes a few detours too many. As a consequence, none the character's arcs really feel fulfilling, and moments that should have been exciting left me unimpressed. It's still an enjoyable watch if you generally like the looks of well-made stop motion (like I do).

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio 2022
A good candidate for the best-looking animated full-length this year (along with The House): The colors are rich, the animation itself is sublime and the designs (as expected with Del Toro) are wonderful, especially the more ethereal creatures. But while I appreciate the attempt at incorporating adult topics into the story, I feel like the film crumbles under its ambitions. (You know there's some miscalculations involved in the script when you have three antagonists in a story and no two…
