The Man Without a Past 2002
Top tier Aki. Love how simply and powerfully it conveys the notion that, when we drop all attachment to our past and stop defining ourselves by it, the possibilities that open up to us in the present are pretty much limitless. Doesn't hurt that it's also one of his funniest, either.

Perfect Days 2023
Just as profound, empathetic, and life affirming on a rewatch as the first time around. So much depth and wisdom hidden in plain sight with barely a word said. A proper wholesome film in that it shows the entire spectrum of human emotion/experience, and embraces all of it equally lovingly. My favourite of the decade and it's gonna take some beating!

Pretty fucking amazing that Kurosawa was almost blind by the time he made Ran and still made it look so dazzling. The colours pop, and there's more visually stunning shots than I can count (that opening shot is especially sick). My favourite of his I've seen so far, by a fair margin.
