Literally every criticism that has been hurled at this film is fair lol, it's jam-packed with Orientalism and misogyny over the course of its too-long run time. Ricardo Montalban is in yellowface (Audrey Hepburn was the original frontrunner to portray the female [Japanese] lead), Japanese culture is shown with sensationalism, and women are subservient and kept that way, dammit. While the two white women in this film aren't spared from oppressive dynamics, Japanese women are fetishized to Hell and back…

A sophomore slump that is more interesting and thought provoking than your average film because Michael Haneke.
Benny's Video's central theme of the addictive, desensitizing, and detaching nature of violent media consumption is clearly depicted and coupled with the most scathing application of self-preservation and complete lack of accountability for one's self or their child. Arno Frisch nails portraying the archetype of the teenage boy you hear about on the news way too often.
All that said, it's pretty boring?…
