Crimes of the Future 2022
A pretty incoherent mess with laughable dialogue. The effects are a pleasingly grungy and tactile throwback, but otherwise a muddled and frankly boring use of a very interesting concept/world.

The Card Counter 2021
Schrader's intense revival of the lone, troubled diariest, plagued by guilt and masculine ideals, continues in this occasionally implausible but grimly tense film. There are notes of Twin Peaks: The Return in the digital sheen of beige motels and glittering casinos. Oscar Isaac is, as always, a magnetic presence. Tiffany Haddish is also excellent. The film's opening and final shots, over which credits roll, remind us of a cinema last seen in 1970s Hollywood. Indeed Isaac could be channeling Robert Mitcham somewhere in between Night of the Hunter and Friends of Eddie Coyle.

Station West 1948
'You're too little to make that big of a mistake".
The clearest cross between noir and western I've seen. Everything about the setup is pure noir with Dick Powell playing Phillip Marlowe again, this time with a six shooter on a horse. Jane Greer is the femme fatale mob boss, straight out of some seedy jazz club on Sunset Boulevard.

Really well written and enjoyable drama, told on an epic scale. Full review: www.eyeforfilm.co.uk/reviews.php?id=10329
