Even with two reels missing, this Lois Weber film is one of her best. The exteriors shot in California's La Brea oil fields and the story of love and conflict among the workers looks forward to Italian Neorealism a quarter century before Visconti, Rossellini, and company!

Directed by John Ford 1971
This is the best non-fiction film about a filmmaker that I have ever seen. An excellent introduction to the work and character of John Ford that eschews the usual meaningless clips for actual scenes. One thing: if you haven't seen The Searchers, see it first. This film shows most of the best scenes of that masterpiece.
