  A simply exquisite film, equipped with laughs, tears, love and lust. Sagan expertly utilizes light and shadow in order to set the tone of each particular scene. Chock-full of chiaroscuro, this film encapsulates German Expressionist Film at its height. All in all, a beautiful tale of a forbidden love affair with an anti-authoritarian message underlying it all.
