While the plot is fictionalized and characters juiced up to fit the bill of an action movie, the lack of tension made the movie brainless. In that way, it was exactly what I wanted at the time. However, this creates no need for me to revisit this movie any time soon. While I’m sure I missed many subtleties, I think this move does a great job of showing the complexities of “big family” cultures dealing with death. The film does a great job of dropping you right in with Sol, watching a family desperately try to celebrate life and come to terms with death.
I wouldn’t say this is too far off from South Asian cultures - death, while just another part of the karmic cycle, is still well-shielded from children.…
