From what I thought was going to be one of the most satisfying cinemagoing experiences of this year, I left the theater being more than mildly unsatisfied to be honest.

Yes, everything is here and in spades: the effects, the acting, the style... But what it lacks is emotion. Nay, I would even go so far as to say that it lacks humanity. And that might have been the entire point: there's a whole set of people at work, like…

As far as I'm concerned, there are 2 directors keeping the Western animation afloat: Tomm Moore and Sylvain Chomet. Both have a distinct style, firmly rooted in their... well, roots. And in my humblest of opinions, they both have a perfect track record.

Wolfwalkers is no exception. Perfecting the style set in the previous movies, richly doused in Irish-Celtic Mythology with the leading role played by young innocence.

It's movies like this we need more in our lives these days.…

Twists and turns at every.... turn? Keeping the pace high - while never losing style. The end feels a bit (Mount)Rush(Mor)ed but apart from that I had loads of fun. First viewing - catching up on some classics.

We predicted VR and annoying personalised ads - but wireless data transfer? Nah, glass floppy discs, sir! 👏

It is still a cool movie - but it suffers too much in 2025 from stylistic and storytelling choices that were very early 00's.

    Still enjoyable though!

    I think I hated this.

There's just something about this that leaves a really sour after-taste.

Is it the fact that a mega corporation like Netflix releases a movie filled with A-list celebrities, waxing cynical about "we live in a society" and "those big bad corporations"?

Is it the that all of it is immensely low-hanging fruit and could just as easily have been a mockumentary about the current pandemic and/or climate change?

Or is it that something like this…

When a co-worker recommends you something like this, you've got to realise she knows you've got an equally twisted mind, right?

I do wonder what international audiences make of this. This is a quintessentially Dutch film and for the better part of my childhood years this is the stereotype of "Hollanders" I as a Belgian held to. Their over sexualised TV programs, contrasting heavily with their Bible Belt piety and their so called progressive society that leans heavily into racism…
