I can’t deny the beauty of this film or its boldness in going to tantalising extremes, but I was a little disappointed that those weren’t used to effectively amount to some sort of idea. Not really many emotional pay-offs but it paints an incredibly good image of who this character is. She’s cruel and manipulative to an obsessive degree. It’s fascinating to watch such a horrible person be forced to face the consequences of their own conniving actions, and the backdrop of the orchestra, along with her position in it, gives it operatic drama.
