Kinda too stunned for words after this one. Just because you can sense something coming, doesn't make it any less tragic when it happens.
The moment I realized the director was nonbinary I felt so stupid for missing the glaringly obvious trans metaphor that is baked into the film. I had picked up inklings of it throughout the course of the film but it wasn't 100% apparent until looking at the director's biography.
Once I realized it was such a strong metaphor, everything made so much more sense, the actions, camera shots, other unsaid (or sometimes said things), the haunting ending as well. Surrendering…
Complete and utter gem of a film. Never in my life have I been able to connect to a coming-of-age style film like this one; the dialogue was seamless and uncannily mimicked how me and those around me talk on a daily basis. Every single person in this film feels like someone I know, someone I've met, someone I'm friends with. Above and beyond my initial expectations for what this would both invoke in me and portray on screen.
