the fact that this movie is outdated is what i find attractive from itβ besides the vibrant coloring, of course! the lack of diversity even among the queer kids in conversion therapy make it clear how the community back then were still viewed as so binary by the general public. not the best movie to learn about LGBTQ+ people, but definitely offers a unique insight into 90s queer media.
also, some jokes are still unironically funny to this day (e.gβ¦
captures queer loneliness a bit too perfectly. do i want to be able to embrace my queerness in a foreign land where i can't speak the people's language or do i want to be a closeted individual but with my family back at home? either way i stay oppressed. something something yadda yadda kill me now
one thing about me is that iβll always eat up a great girlhood movie π₯² son-chan you are SO LOVED BY ME. and that scene at the toilet sink where son and kei thank each other in their respective languages, immediately understanding what the other is saying??? immaculate. *chefs kiss*. i love GIRL FRIENDSHIPS.
