I think I liked In Bruges better. Beautiful camera work. Fantastic acting. But a little dull, depressing, and a little too on-the-nose with the Irish civil war allegory.

The 13th Warrior 1999

I've got a ridiculous soft spot for this shlockey thing. I remember watching it at like 1am during a sleepover when I was 10 or 11 and thinking the bear-people mystery was really cool. Questionable casting aside, I really like the gritty setting, and Magnificent 7 style plot. Any piece of media that sends an elite group of warriors with colorful personalities and abilities for some half-mystical purpose is right up my alley. And what an awesome way to use the plot and special abilities of the main character to get around the language barrier stuff.

What a pleasant surprise this was. I keep waiting for the dramatic drop off in this franchise and I can't seem to find one.
