Ribhu Dasgupta’s The Girl on The Train is a weirdly paced mess. We never get to see the grime behind her alcohol dependency. Everything is completely surface level. The scenes are not allowed to breathe as the film wants to operate as a fast paced thriller. Disappointing but that’s nothing new from Netflix India. Parineeti’s performance is a big dud. The direction and script can be blamed but she also fails to deliver a compelling character. There’s an odd inconsistency in her portrayal that isn’t helped by the choppy editing. Bad film.

Renuka Shahane’s Tribhanga is another misfire for Netflix India. The filmmaking style is very melodramatic and too on the nose. Not ideal for digital content with this subject matter. The entire story you can piece together from the trailer itself. Kajol’s performance is a mixed bag. The film feels like it was made as an acting showcase for her. This really works against the film. She has all the lines and gripping moments. Her performance starts a few notches too high.…

Vikramaditya Motwane’s black comedy thriller AK vs AK one of the finest Hindi films in recent times. Anil Kapoor is one of the first stars I fell in love with. Movies like Ram Lakhan, Nayak, Mr. India, Lamhe and Beta were some of my favourite films going up. Nowadays he is a character actor with his career as a lead star long behind him. Anurag Kashyap is one of the most influential filmmakers currently. However, post Bombay Velvet he has struggled…

David Dhawan’s Coolie No. 1 is unbearable and exhausting. The opening animation sequence is fine and reminds me of Partner. The first half hour is fine and you get the idea this will be a decent mindless entertainer. The film then proceeds to be a circle of endless and unfunny gags. The story is awful even for David Dhawan standards. There are brief moments of witty punchlines but for the most part the film is unfunny. Varun Dhawan does not suit…
