A gorgeous, sexy, deeply tragic movie. I’ve long been interested in this film because I knew it through its score, which I love. But so much of the charm here is visual. The lighting, the mise-en-scène, the costumes—everything comes together deliciously. The tone is a bit uneven, and I think at times it drags a little. Minor flaws overall in what remains a great achievement of the French cinema.

The interpretive move made about 3/4 of the way through here seems hugely premature as presented. And it was very odd that 1) no members of the faith community in question were called in to discuss the matter, and 2) apparently there was no effort to ascertain the object’s origin. The nails and noose are from Wal-Mart. The person who made it might still be around. And did they bother to email the guy who made those statues on Etsy?…

Gothic horror as it should be: dark and sumptuous, like a black velvet noose.
Lily-Rose Depp has studied Butoh, and it shows. Willem Defoe is very fun to watch; I almost wish he had been on-screen even more than he was. Not enough people are praising Simon McBurney for his turn as the mad occultist, Knock (Dracula’s Renfield).
The Herzog version is still better, as he handles the plague in a much eerier way (and has a better ending). I…
