Get on Up 2014
Still not sure about the bio-pic as a form, and Get On Up doesn't make a definitive case. Still, Boseman fully channels James Brown and Nelsan Ellis as hype man Bobby Byrd is the film's secret skeleton. Fractured and non-linear because there's too much gnarled history to fully explore, we get a thread-board of the headlines wrapped around reenactments of the blistering and legendary live shows. James Brown characterized the entire alignment chart, which Get On Up doesn't shy away from, even if the form demands and overlong film that can't help but hold onto "he did bad but was a genius" narrative.
