I wanted to enjoy this so much… but it fell totally flat

Feeling conflicted about this. Part of me doesn’t like representations of working class despair which, while being based in social-realism, present an exaggerated version of things which chime closely with the images of working class life that have accompanied decades of austerity. On the other hand, there’s so much about this film that I like: there are some great performances at the centre of the film, I enjoyed the set piece in the final act (which reminded me of Love Lies Bleeding), and appreciated the unusually sensitive rendering of teenage parenthood.

A film that becomes far more interesting when you think of it as one of consistencies (not contrasts). The family/career/home-making as consistent with fascism, not as a contrast to it

A useful depiction of armed struggle in Ireland that starts well then fizzles out. I was pleased to see Frank Kitson featured but barely any mention of loyalist paramilitaries or British terrorism. If you didn’t know better you’d come away from this series thinking it was actually Gerry Adams who was at fault for the fact that Britain colonised and brutalised Ireland.
