  It occurs to me that the only time a British or American film will visit France is for somewhat glamorous reasons, be it romance on the streets of Paris, or beholding the excessive splendour of Monaco (yes, I know Monaco is a separate territory, calm down). Unless you actively seek out French films like Custody, you won't ever really get a feel for what everyday life is like there.
