    This is an unnecessary cliché-ridden formulaic shadow of a good anime film. It's predictable with an eyerollingly bad script that was based upon a one-page note something or other that Tolkien wrote in one of his appendices.

    The only (and I really mean ONLY) redeeming quality is Brian Cox as King Helm Hammerhand. He plays the role with joyous overacting abandon. The rest of it is a slog, including the animation.

    As a kid I loved disaster films like Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake (in Sensurround!), Towering Inferno and Airport. I only saw them the once and so I put them on my Letterboxd watchlist hoping that they show up streaming somewhere. Of the films I listed, The Poseidon Adventure was my favorite so I was stoked to see it pop up on Prime Video. Hoping that I'd still enjoy it 50 years later I turned it on.

    After I finished Poor Things last night I thought to myself that if Emma Stone didn't win the Academy Award the Academy was irrelevent. It's not that the favorite Lily Gladstone wasn't great in Killers of the Flower Moon, she was, but Stone's characterization of Bella Baxter was one of the most original performances I've ever seen. When they announced her name she appeared stunned and I stood up and cheered.
