very sweet and made me cry, anything with family stuff does, but run of the mill and won't blow anyone's mind. that scene where the mom is cradling her daughter's head in her lap, would've been a perfect chance to show tears dropping from the mother's eyes onto ruby, a purely physical display of affection not shown, just not that type of movie. sounds dumb, but there's just not enough poetry like that here.

The first Brother was a fascinating, deep look into a Russia that was undergoing a destructive transition to capitalism. It destroyed the lives of everyone but the oligarchs and the Americans who invested in this new colonial outpost for capital. American financial interests were the ones who helped prop up those oligarchs and helped set the stage for Putin's rule. He's only there because we allowed it.
