i say i’m not into horror films and then i go and watch all this smh

this was so simply laid and well-constructed: the juxtaposition of painstakingly preparing good food and disgustedly clearing its remains away, the inescapable itch that burrows deep under your skin with all the unseen, unappreciated labor, the subtler sides of mistreatment and abuse, the desperation with which you scrub at your hands, some twisted allusion to lady macbeth’s hunger, trying to wash away this patina…

ah, yes, the holy trinity: prime Karthik winking, revathy’s eyes, and ck’s thoughtful gift of golusu and divorce.

this movie’s foundational to my ideals of companionship and domesticity. it feels impossible that this kind of relationship can emerge or exist in this world, but baby saga hopes nevertheless, bless her. i grew up on this movie (and all the films that came after, taking inspiration from it), and if there’s any reason for me to believe in marriage (arranged or…

i think I finally understand pookie because brian johnson is it.

this movie is iconic, and the overall themes hold up (and i will always fall for a good teen angst movie, but that’s beside the point). like many a teen movie has been made, but they haven’t all stuck. that said, the two biggest crimes of this movie are the “princess” falling for the guy that keeps berating/sexually harassing her without a second of remorse and that fucking makeover because allison looked way better before the claire standish cosplay happened.

the banger soundtrack goes without saying.

This left me wanting so much more. I appreciate that this movie spans a lot of topics (IVF, same-sex parenting, being childfree, single parenting), but I wish they were covered with more substance because there were significant moments where the movie just felt performative. Still, I’m glad this wasn’t overtly emotional and mostly leaned on its romantic comedy inclinations. I think the way Ravi Mohan’s character comes around to being part of a family unit is a bit trite, but…
