  This film paints a pretty bleak picture.

  Practically every character is, at best, antipathetic towards their hand in life, and relationships are loveless and fairly self motivated. The moments of warmth in the second half provide some welcome relief, but it doesn’t take a film critic to see a hugely cynical portrayal of adolescence. 

  In fact, the cynical, and at times depressing, tone is what I like about this film. By the end, we’re not forced into a huge celebration…
