    I regret watching this film because I did not know that people died for someone’s self-important and incredibly useless idea of pulling up a ship over the mountain. It’s not poetic, it’s just colonial. The narrative of bringing European “high culture”  into the jungle doesn’t make it better. Especially because Werner Herzog seems to know that it is ridiculous. Fitz is clearly portrayed as manic, but Herzog dwells in romanticizing the “crazy genius” archetype. Art doesn’t justify death and exploitation.
