  Many years ago I read something somewhere (I’ve never been able to find it again) which essentially argued that what we experience as“depth” is just a quality of surface - like a mood, or a texture - and that everything is always equally shallow and equally profound because it all plays out on the same shimmering two-dimensional plane. I think about that all the time.
