Phantom Thread 2017
1. Find someone who will love you as much as Reynolds Woodcock loves breakfast.
2. I really enjoy the way this film reveals itself, so disarmingly, to be much much stranger than it initially appears.
3. A movie about the seductive power of control that is itself immaculately controlled.
4. The way Daniel Day Lewis twirls a fork in this movie is better than all Gangs of New York and Lincoln put together.

The Birdcage 1996
1. I cannot overstress how essential a part of my childhood Gene Hackman’s beautifully grouchy face was. Part of the fabric of everyday life, as real to me as the curtains in our front room or the fold-down arm-rest in the back of the car.
2. Impossible to count the number of very good reasons Hank Azaria would not play that part in 2025 and yet he is truly wonderful.
3. This whole film is really an incredible time capsule of its very strange era. They should study it in museums.
4. RIP my wonderful guy.

Rebel Ridge 2024
1. A movie hamstrung by the piercing clarity of its own morality.
2. There’s a scene in this movie in which a character spends 5 minutes looking up an acronym on Wikipedia and somehow it is the best and coolest scene in the whole movie.
3. Perhaps the point is to try and find an approach to overwhelming injustice that doesn’t devolve into nihilistic violence, and certainly there’s a kind of fascism built into the form of the conventional revenge…

In a Lonely Place 1950
1. The most stressful grapefruit-preparing in the history of motion pictures.
2. A film of perfectly calibrated sadness. All the sad pieces slowly coming together in the saddest way possible.
3. We’ve watched a lot of Humphrey Bogart movies recently but this is undoubtedly his best performance of any of them. That familiar roguish charm slowly congealing into something harder, crueler and more desperate.
4. All time top 10 movie title.
