Mikey17 struggles with its identity, often feeling structurally disjointed and tonally inconsistent. Prime Cut is an odd one - it has some strong action scenes, particularly the wheat field sequence, but the plot is nearly nonexistent. It strings together action set pieces with minimal narrative, leaving many questions unanswered. The hinted history between Marvin and Hackman’s characters, as well as Marvin’s connection to Hackman’s wife, remains unexplored. Character motivations and backstories are vague, making it hard to invest in their journeys. Ultimately, Prime Cut fails to deliver.
Licorice Pizza is Anderson at his best… we’re in Boogie Nights/Magnolia territory here. The movie benefits hugely from a having a very loose plot, invoking the feeling that for 133mins you are just watching life happen. Anderson gets the best from his cast, including some particularly notable performances from Penn and Cooper. However, in the end it is Haim and Hoffman who have to carry this movie, which they achieve with considerable aplomb.
