Such a deft, confidently made movie. One of my all time favorites.

Twin Peaks 1989
I'm usually anti reviewing tv shows or miniseries on letterboxd, but this is my favorite tv show of all time right alongside The Sopranos, and David Lynch just died. A real creative force who understood the process on an actionable level, but also intellectually and could be articulate about it in a way that very, very few people can.
Lynch has always been a funny paradox to me in that I've never really felt like he was a personal favorite…

The Lost City of Z 2016
One of the more underappreciated movies to come out in the last ten years. Scratches the Master and Commander itch.
I can overlook some of its weird staccato pacing because it's a lot more complicated than it appears on its surface; no easy answers with regards to familial responsibility vs responsibility to one's own need for singular experience and discovery. Summed up nicely near the end when Fawcett's own wife quotes Browning by saying in a toast, "A man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's heaven for?"

Bull Durham 1988
Still my favorite sports movie because it's unabashedly a sports movie in a way that other movies are almost ashamed to be. It revels in the romanticism and the idiosyncrasies of baseball and elevates them to religious tenets. What else can it be but religious devotion that keeps a journeyman minor league catcher going, spending half the season on a bus, moving constantly, making essentially no money at all?
I liked it maybe a tick less than the other times…
