    Parasite

    ★★★½

Parasite is a great movie that combines a wide variety of cinematic and narrative elements to tell an engaging story. My favorite cinematic element used by Joon-Ho is the use of verticality to represent financial/social disparity. The parks live, quite litterally, above the Kims, and the themes of basements/underground living helps reinforce this motif.

    La Petite Jérusalem

    ★★★

La petite Jerusalem was a genuine and compelling look into the experiences that many immigrants face when adapting to a foreign country and culture. The use of extreme close up and textual sound helped create a physical empathy between the characters and audience. The depictions of terror and assault on marginalized places and individuals wa also a sobering reminder of the struggles of these groups.

    Southland Tales

    ★★½

Southland tales is a bizarre, yet entertaining film. Without a doubt there is a strong social, political, and spiritual commentary being made in this film, however, I am not sure what it is. The film is relentless in its depiction of violence, sex, drugs, and social upheaval. All of these aspects come together to create a wild cinematic experice.

During each of the frames I recorded my unadulterated thoughts in some semblance to measure my thoughts on the film throughout its vignettes. I suppose I'll just transcribe those for my review to give you all a picture of how I viewed the movie. Here goes.

    1) Ok. Cool dog.
    2) ehhh. Cool horse.
    3) The cow didn't die, nice.
    4) This snow effect does not look good. What are these deer doing?
    5) Odd music choice. Watching a deer…
