I'm not sure what Barbie literally represents. In the beginning it seems like Barbieland is kind of the collective imagination of children playing with Barbie dolls - also a representation of childrens' ideas about femininity. It gets a little more complicated when Barbie becomes physically manifested in the real world and the link between Barbie and Sasha seems to break. Is Barbie a manifested dream symbol interacting with her creator here? (As an aside, I wrote a paper in college…
i absolutely revere this movie.
it happens to be my favorite star wars film. if you go into it asking: “why am i supposed to hate this, and what exactly is it doing to frustrate me?” you will find that it is by far the most intelligent and self-aware film in the star wars saga.
