After just having watched _Anna Christie_, an utterly joyless film about a young woman (Greta Garbo) living on a working barge, _L'Atalante_, another film about a young woman (Dita Parlo) living on a working barge, could be so ebullient and fun, and sexy! Hooray for the French.

Anna Christie 1930
Is nobody own me. Except for myself.
Based on the Eugene O'Niel play, a Swedish immigrant father who lives on a coal barge is reunited with his 20-year-old daughter (Garbo) who he thought he had sent to grow up in a wholesome environment. Instead, she had been worked to the bone as a poor relation on a farm, and took refuge as a sex worker. After some time at sea on the barge, she feels cleansed of her past, but when she comes clean to her father and her Irish beau, her new life is rattled.

Damn Yankees 1958
My first Gwen Verdon film! What a pleasure to meet her "in person". Also interesting to watch pre-Cabaret Fosse choreography. A devilshly fun time in 50's America.
