perfect example of what happens when a talented director gets hollywood-washed. beneath the flashy visuals and SNL-like parody, there is a surprisingly sharp political commentary and critique on populist figures, but it’s buried under layers of safe satire and blockbuster budget. Robert Pattinson’s weird high-pitched voice made the whole thing borderline disney-esque, making it impossible to take seriously. what started as a promising concept ends up drowned in commercial packaging with feel-good humor.

without a doubt, my least favorite Sean Baker film. surprised that it won Cannes—it feels like some Hollywood nepotism at play tbh 🤔. while the film tries to present her as this strong female character, it ultimately falls short, reducing her to a mere object of desire. the focus is so heavily on Vanya that we learn nothing meaningful about Anora, despite her being central to the plot. it feels like a film made by a man, for men, complicit in dehumanizing sex workers by offering no real empathy or depth to their lives.
