A stellar performance with amazing stop motion work that leaves a lot to be desired. The pieces are there and Robert Morgan has more than proven his horror and directing shots in his shorts. But this movie could’ve benefited from a stronger writing team and a more engaging/ interesting hook.
That being said, I still think it’s worth the watch for the amazing stop motion work and Aisling Franciosi’s performance.
Great showing for Dev Patels’s directorial feature debut. As far as plot and action goes, it does little in terms of originality, even falling from time into a paint by numbers story. However, that never stops the action and direction from being frenetic, weighty and impactful.
What really sets the basic plot apart and prevents Monkey Man from being generic is what Dev Patel manages to say about the disenfranchised in Modi’s India.
“The CW did it better” isn’t something you should be saying about a $200million+ movie. I’m not just talking about the story, characters, design and charm, for the budget CW’s flash has better CGI as well.
It’s so easy to dismiss it as “just another superhero movie”, but all it’s shortcomings are doubled coming out right after Guardians and Beyond the Spiderverse.

Not only does this movie provide a master class in animation, art style, and framing. But it manages to convey interesting and sincere characters that invest you into everything that’s happening.
There really isn’t much to say other than how amazing this movie is, and depending on the third movie it could be “miles” ahead of into the spider verse
