Movies that feature two characters who learn about each other while smoking a cigarette together will always be a weakness for me. What they tease out of each other is the devastating idea that an imminent death will be the catalyst that they need for their lives to change. It feels like a frightening and cruel thought, to need something dear to die in order to evolve.

Kogonada is incredible in portraying the relationship between Cassie and Jin. They share…

“Sometimes it’s a little too much on the heart and that’s no excuse, but I hope you can forgive me.”

Sing Sing is a deeply tender film and it serves as a balm to the heart for those who need to hold on to hope. Each character is afforded incredible humanity and there is such beautiful Black masculinity that is in beloved harmony with others, and is juxtaposed by how prisons only work to cannibalise on hope and healing from…

An irritating watch. Thoroughly unentertaining. Just another movie in the plethora of movies that has one eccentric antagonist who lures people into his bizarre space to expose the real evils of society, except whatever is revealed does not have any real legs to stand on. It wants to talk about the toxic parasocial nature of the journalist who wishes to write about celebrity culture but has no idea what it wants to say, nor how OR why it is trying…

An absolute abyss of misery. So gleeful in its quest to torture. If there was a human embodiment of this film, I would have emptied a magazine into it.

Fatalist, misogynist, embarrassing. You can't create a movie that tries to make a point about women being objectified while ultimately objectifying her. Ani is constantly made the punchline to a joke that I am not laughing at. Am I supposed to believe this movie cares about sex workers with the number of rape jokes we had to endure? Christ. Finally, I think Sean Baker is a creep. This is made even more obvious to me considering that there are multiple sex scenes and there wasn't an intimacy coordinator on set? Fuck off.

Probably the only comedian I will actually like. Not because I enjoy the Oz references, or that she's a master at landing full circle jokes, but because she actually seems like someone who has a fucking heart.
