Had to drop it down a star with time. On my original few viewings I was so impressed with this film that I was able to willingly overlook the graphic rape scene. I always hated it, thought it was useless, but winced and dismissed it as part of the horror of it all. But the more I watch Noe the more it seems like a sick signature of his, present only as some sort of moniker.
It adds nothing to the theme, it adds nothing to the film, I wish it wasn’t there.

I’ve thought a lot about this movie since I watched it, hence the review 3 years late.
It’s not an enjoyable movie for me, though honestly I really respect Haneke for how the audiences discomfort is an intentional decision in his filmmaking.
I’m also very cautious of it. It’s one of those films that really speaks to me in an intimate and vulnerable way, and I find it strange to see people who hold very different views to me on women’s sexuality also laude the film.
An indecisive four for this one, until I can bring myself to watch it again.
