    Past Lives

    ★★★★

A film of longing for a life not lived, by sheer circumstance, events out of our control that play a part in controlling avenues and channels of our lives. Past Lives is also a film of introspection, and the deliberate and delightful cinematography bring many of the inner turmoil into a visual frame. The story is written a tad too cleanly, but it still packs an emotional punch by it's end.

    Ataraxia

    ★★★

A neat analog horror bringing the vibes of Annihilation on a smaller scale and a darker atmosphere. Available on YouTube. I had never seen this filmmaker's work before, but the poster stood out to me in a list of 2025 films, so I watched it, late at night.

    Black Bag

    ★★★½

Soderbergh in his bag. Black Bag is a sleek and stylish little spy thriller that has Michael Fassbender playing an inhuman lie detector attempting to uncover which of five government operatives leaked important classified data out of the country. Of the names he's given as potential suspects, his wife's name is at the top. Black Bag becomes just as much about relationship dynamics as much as it is a tense, intelligently crafted and cleverly written spy thriller.

    Hedgehog in the Fog

    ★★★★½

Hedgehog in the Fog is a cutout animation that tells the story of a hedgehog who, on his way to visit his friend, a bear, becomes lost in a mystical fog, which is hiding all kinds of creatures and animals. The animation itself is really well done, with many shots and scenes that are able to incorporate the third dimension. There is a tangible atmosphere in the world created by director and animator Yuri Norstein, and the ambiguous fog creates a sense of danger about the unknown. Of course, not every animal is a threat in this brilliant little short film.
