Faces was my first venture into the world of Cassavetes, big shoutout to the wonderful user Adam for recommending it as a starting point! What an introduction it was, I loved this film and its uncontainable energy from the very beginning. The atmosphere alone is enough to carry you swiftly through the film's 3 hour runtime, in fact I had to double check that it was that long as it really did not feel that way to me. I could…

    David Lynch: The Art Life

    ★★★½

I don't have too much to say about The Art Life, it was simply a pleasant sit-in with the man, myth, and legend that is David Lynch. While the documentary itself isn't really anything special, it does give a lot of insight into Lynch's path to where he is today and reaffirms any beliefs that he's one of the most precious humans to grace this planet. I've got a lot of love for the man and am very excited to see what he cooks up next.

Vera Chytilova's films have arrived en masse to the Criterion Channel, and having loved Daisies I am immediately taking the opportunity to check out more of her stuff. I started with Wolf's Hole, and oh man it is one of the most unsettling films I've ever seen. It's like Vera took all the fun, mischievous energy of Daisies and transformed it into an anxious, paranoid energy that constantly assaults the mind's sense of security. There's creepy actors, creepy visuals, creepy…

    The Great Sadness of Zohara

    ★★★½

The Great Sadness of Zohara is a short film that is hard to understand yet easy to enjoy. Director Nina Menkes caught my eye on the list of new arrivals to the Criterion Channel this month and I decided I'll check out her stuff throughout the month, starting with this short. It is a journey of a short film; it follows the troubled, lost soul that is Zohara around Israel with a series of beautifully framed still shots. It's also…
