Donald Sutherland should know you do all your chopping prior to stir frying. Also, he had the heat far too low on that wok, there was no sizzle. Lastly, the ginger should’ve gone in early doors, and definitely not post-celery.

A middle tier Rohmer, but that still qualifies it for the dizzy heights of four stars. Not many films pivot on a smoking potato peeler. The slow camera zooms as characters embark on a monologue are very engaging, and the wafer thin necklace mystery is a fun distraction. My only qualm as a citizen of extortionate London is how all these teachers and journos have collections of Paris apartments and country houses!

Margot Robbie is supreme in this, a destroyer of worlds. And yes yes, the film is bloated, cringey, etc. But for me it’s full marks because of its flaws, not despite them. And I’m sure the cockroach/critic analogy in no way impacted the critical reception here, right?
